What is an Informed Conscience?

In order to make a decision doctor’s access a wide range of medical knowledge and patient history in order to diagnose a problem and treatment. The same principle can be applied to making moral decisions. We must be well informed regarding all the facts of the situation, moral values, virtues and laws in order to make our final decision. Therefore, an informed catholic conscience is an educated conscience that knows in any given situation.

Read the following scenario and answer the questions:

Roger Smith, a quite competent swimmer, is out for a leisurely stroll. During the course of his walk he passes by a deserted pier from which a teenage boy who apparently cannot swim has fallen into the water. The boy is screaming for help. Smith recognizes that there is absolutely no danger to himself if he jumps in to save the boy; he could easily succeed if he tried. Nevertheless, he chooses to ignore the boy’s cries. The water is cold and he is afraid of catching a cold — he doesn’t want to get his good clothes wet either. “Why should I inconvenience myself for this kid,” Smith says to himself, and passes on.

1.) There are always TWO sides to a conscience. What would Roger’s conscience be telling him?

2.) Think of an example of Jesus’ teaching and explain how his teachings can help us to make an appropriate decision?

1.  In this story it show that rogers moral maturity is very low, in this story it clearly shows that roger listened to the wrong part of his conscience. Roger considered things like, getting his clothes wet, catching a cold and the inconvenience that it will have to him. The good part of rogers conscience had told him that if he saved he saved the boy it would be no inconvenience to himself and he would of surely succeeded, but roger choose to not care and kept walking along, leaving the child to eventually die. If Roger had put that boys life before his well being and clothing, both of them would of lived and a family would of been very grateful, but instead would be very sad and devastated.

2. Many of Jesus teachings can help us make the right decisions, these can include the beatitudes, thee teachings have many meanings and can be a big help for many situations. Blessed<!––>are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted, this beatitude in relation to the scenario means that even though the boy mourned god would have comforted him and will have a place for him in heaven.

Answer the following questions on your blog:

1.) Give a brief description of who the Dalai Lama is? (Include resources to support)

His Holiness the 14th the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He was born Lhamo Dhondrub on 6 July 1935, in a small village called Taktser in northeastern Tibet. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognized at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama, and thus an incarnation Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.

The Dalai lama in regard to the riots in Tibet would be regarded as exemplary moral integrity because the Dalai lama is putting the needs of others before himself, he recognised that if he resigns the violence will stop.

Individual Task 3 – Ethical principles

Watch the following clip on Maximillian Kolbe:

1.)

Define the term ‘moral integrity’

The term moral integrity refers to someones view of what is right and wrong. Peoples moral integrity depends on what they think and believe is right, they then act upon their decision. The decision could be a bad decision or it could be a good decision, people can improve their moral integrity over time and age.

2.) Describe why Maximillian Kolbe is regarded as a Christian of exemplary moral integrity.

Maximillian kolbe is regarded as an christian exemplary of moral integrity because he sacrificed his own life for a life of another person who he didn’t even know. He did this because he had a strong belief in his faith and he knew that god would do the same thing.

3.) Outline Maximillians ethical actions/principles that he demonstrated in Auschwitz.During the second world war

Maximillan provided shelter to refugees from greater Poland, including 2000 Jews who he hid from Nazi prosecution. He also provided the prisoners with food, he would always sneak the prisoners bread and wine for them to eat.

4.) Evaluate whether you think he made the right decision and provide research to support your answer. i.e. Catholic teachings.

I would not do what maximillian kolbe did, i think that what he did required alot of bravery and faith. Sacrificing his life for Franciszek Gajowniczeks who he hadn’t even met before. What he did would be greatly appreciated by the catholic world, because he gave up his life for a man he didn’t even know, that’s exactly what god did for us, he sacrificed his life for all of us and the forgiveness of our sins.

1. Watch the following video:

1.) Describe the term ‘interactive TV’.

The term interactive TV describes a number of techniques which allow viewers to interact with television content as they view it. An example of interactive TV is polls that are open to all interactive TV subscribers, this allows the viewer to vote on the poll using their remote. Interactive TV gives the viewer more power letting the viewer decide how they want to watch programming and when they want to watch it. But with the improvement of technology interactive TV is going to get better, allowing the viewer to download or rent TV shows or movies from the Internet to watch wither on their computers or TV. This is going to be made possible by connecting our phone lines to the Internet. The viewer will only be charged for what they watch, this is more convient for the viewer.

2.) Explain the reasons why interactive TV is now called TV 2.0.

By combining the interactivity of Web services and the Internet with the trend toward on-demand and anywhere viewing, the world of television is about to radically change in ways that will dwarf the changes to the Internet referred to as Web 2.0. We’re calling this change “Television 2.0.”

3.) Outline the positives and negatives of implementing interactive TV.

Positives

1. Watch what you want whenever you want

2. Appealing and enjoyable with interactive activities such as voting.

3. Shows and movies can be downloaded from the Internet

4. Can record shows that you have missed due to being out or having no time.

5. Can pause or rewind live TV

6. If u are watching a football game and their are 2 or more football games on, you can watch them both in different screen sizes.

Negatives

1.  If you are downloading from the Internet, it may take to long or you might Have more downloading usage.

2. Cost might go higher for things such as extension on your Internet, new box and remote,  possibly a bigger TV to experience the full potential.

3. Might be to complicated for people to use, and are just happy with the old way of watching television.

4.) Apple released recently Apple TV – Take 2. Describe the reasons why it needed to be changed.

1.) Watch the following clip:

Scenario 1: You are on a train coming home from a day at the beach. The train stops at a station and a group a youths get on the train and start bashing an elderly ethnic man. You notice people getting off the train.

Discuss what you would do in this situation.

Well without a doubt i would be very terrified to confront the youth, so at this point i must use my brain and try  find a way to help this elderly man without getting involved.

Firstly i will unnoticeabley  get off the train and tell the guards that are on duty, also at this time i will call he police and make sure that they arrive as soon a possible.

I will also remember the attackers physical appearance just in case i am interviewed as a witness later on.

Scenario 2: You get a message from a girl that you are interested asking you to come over her house. When you get there a number of her friends are present and they say they are bored. One of them promotes the idea of going for a walk and causing a riot. At first you tell them “No way”. However, the girl you like states that “she will like you more if you go”.

Discuss what you would do in this situation.

Well in this situation considering that my friends are bored, i would tell them to consider some activities such as going to the movies, or going to the park to have a kick of the ball. If they do not accept i will tell them the consequences that they will suffer if they are caught such as injury, arrest and the trouble they will get in with their parents and community. If they do not accept reason i will simply walk out and have nothing to do with it. But i will warn their parents so they do not get into any trouble.
